To my utter shock, also found a letter from his manager to wear a neat looking shoes, henceforth to the office.I remembered my mother pestering him to buy a pair of new shoes, but he would convince her that his shoes would last another six months at least.

Also, found an old scooter to a new bike, Exchange offer letter in his wallet.
​ ​


I instantly remembered, that when I left home, my Dad's scooter was not there.I started feeling weak in my

legs, and felt like weeping uncontrollably!I ran back home with my foot paining, only to find my Dad nor the scooter there. I found him at the exchange offer place.

Looking at my Dad, my grief engulfed me.
​ ​
I hugged him tightly and started crying loudly, said "Dad I don't need the Bike".


That is when I realised, the pain, hardship our parents go through, and the unconditional love that they give us.

We should only look to seek our needs and not our unrealistic wants.
​ ​
Ridiculing parents when they are alive, and longing for them when they are not around, has no meaning.
​ ​

[HM:258416] 8 Ways to be More Productive


Being a Lean expert, I am always obsessively spotting inefficiencies everywhere! While it can be to my own detriment, the good thing is that I'm always trying to think about how I can be more efficient. This lets me manage all the things I need to do, such as running two businesses, being a treasurer for a not for profit, investing in property, writing a book, helping my husband on his 1000 herd dairy farm, renovating etc.

So here are the 8 things which I do to better manage my time and increase productivity:

1. Synchronised Outlook

Having my email accounts connected via exchange on all my devices (iPhone, iPad and Mac – yes I am a Apple fan) is essential for me to be flexible and connected no matter where I am. This way I can type emails during what I call non-value add times for example while waiting in a queue, waiting for a flight, sitting in the car.

2. Electronic calendar with categorisation

This is a must – everything I do goes in my Outlook calendar and is synchronised across all my devices. I also colour code each entry such as travel, business meetings, networking, client work, personal appointments, etc. Birthdays also go in to reminders. This way I can easily and quickly see what I have on and where my priorities are.

3. Whiteboard

While I use tasks in Outlook or on my iPhone app to keep track of my to-do items, the best way to keep track is a Visual Management Board that I keep in my office. This is a whiteboard that I've split into key categories eg Property, Business, Book, Association and under each category I add in bullet points the things I need to work on. I also have a column for Today and This Week. I find this a great visual way of tracking everything and ticking things off all on one board and in one place. It also makes you feel and be in control.

4. Electronic Notes

There is nothing worse than having a million post its stuck all over your desk (although I do admit that I have a few) or bits of paper everywhere. Worse still is when you are madly trying to find an important note you made amongst all that paper. I write all my notes and reminders on my devices (e.g iPhone) and it is synchronised via cloud so that I never lose any info again and I can find it very quickly if needed.

5. Go Paperless

I used to get so stressed when I would have hundreds of bills, paper documents and files lying around needing to be filed somewhere. My shelves were full of folders. Not anymore. If I need to keep a document or a bill, as soon as I receive it, I scan and file it electronically. I keep backup hard drives to ensure nothing gets lost. I also have a shredder to destroy information sensitive documents.

6. Clear Desk Policy

At the end of each day, I clear my desk and put everything away into allocated spots. This way I can start the next day with a clean slate and a fresh mind. This does wonders for your mind clarity and productivity.

7. Standardised Work Week

This is a big one! I set myself a standard week schedule which has Mon – Friday on it and for each day I have standard time slots allocated to specific tasks. For example Monday morning from 7-9am is blocked out for writing my book, Tues 8-10am is blocked out for writing articles, Friday from 7-8 am is blocked for my weekly Improvement Tip and 8-10am is blocked out for working on my business marketing & strategy. This way you ensure that you work on the important $1000 tasks and not just fill your day with emails, calls and possibly lots of $10 tasks. This is a fundamental way that you prioritise the right things and actually get them done rather than procrastinating.

How Can I Develop Analytical Skills 

8. Small Bite Sized Chunks

I try to do a small amount of everything everyday. So rather than have a big mammoth task, I break things down into bite sized chunks and work on a part each day. This way a big daunting task becomes much more manageable. So for example everyday I allocate some time to business, to property, to my Treasurer role, to my book etc. That way it gets done a little bit each day and doesn't feel so overwhelming. And surprisingly you get things done much quicker when they are broken down into small components and worked on one step at a time.

[HM:258415] The 5S’ – 5 Steps to a Well organized Work and Home


Have you ever noticed that when your workplace or home is full of clutter: paper notes all over your desk, documents that haven't been filed, items all over table tops, piles on the floor, things that don't have a home and are just making everything look messy…. You get more stressed out?

A disorganised office or home can leave you feeling out of control, frustrated and add to your stress levels. It also makes your day super unproductive. Do you regularly ask "where is it?" or are trying to look for things and can't find them? Do others constantly ask you where they can find something? Have you re-done something simply because you couldn't find it the first time? Or maybe even bought a new one of something? A disorganised office or home can create a lot of inefficiencies. Furthermore it can look very unprofessional and we all want to make the best impact on people around us whether they are our colleagues or friends visiting our home.

The Japanese realised this decades ago in their factories and developed a concept called 5S which has been used by some of the biggest and best companies globally to improve their quality, safety and productivity, and also the work environment for employees.

So what is this tool all about? Here are the 5S steps:

Step 1 – SORT

This is about Sorting through what is needed (really needed) from what is not needed in an area (your office or home e.g the wardrobe). This can be quite challenging but you need to ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is the purpose of the area? What does it need to do?
  • Do I need these items?
  • How often do I use them?
  • When did I last use them?
  • Are they still relevant?

You should then sort things into three groups: "not needed at all" and you will get rid of, "needed occasionally" – you should move this stuff into labelled cupboards away from the area, and "needed often" – keep in the immediate area.

When to use Zoom In and Zoom Out tools?

Step 2 – SET

This step means to decide where the items you will keep should be placed/ stored or positioned within the area. This is about having a place for everything and everything in its place. Items that you use regularly should be placed near to where you use them so that you reduce unnecessary movement. Items used less regularly can be stored a little further away. Importantly, you should have clearly marked locations for things such as labelled drawers or cupboards so that the things are very easy and visual to find.

Step 3 – SHINE

Now it's time to clean up – this is about ensuring that the area is thoroughly cleaned. So time to pull out the cleaning gloves and products and make your area shine! Don't forget hidden spots. As a practical point, it is sometimes easier and more practical to do this step before step 2.

How to Make Effective Decisions?

Step 4 – STANDARDISE

This is a really important step but often gets forgotten. Once you have put in all the hard work in steps 1-3 you must create a Standard for how the area will continue to look. This is about documenting or making it clear what the expected level of cleanliness and organisation that needs to be maintained, how often cleaning or organising is required, who is responsible, where the standard locations for things are and so on. A good visual standard will ensure that everyone is aware of the expected condition and your workplace or home will stay organised. If you don't put this standard in place, you can be sure that within a very short time your area will be back to square one.

This is probably the hardest bit but most certainly a standard will help you to sustain a well-organised and professional looking workplace or home. [HM:258411] 25 Employee Engagement Ideas


Employee engagement is not an exact science. So far, the whole concept has been built on HR experience, positive psychology1 and business models that engage a company's talent towards a productive culture of success.

At the core of employee engagement, similar to any company's foundation, are some values. These values determine the why, how and what of that company.

In today's economy, you're building your company brand both through external as well as internal efforts. Playing two battlefields at the same time can prove to be tricky, that's why some companies decide to focus their resources only on the external branding front. Meanwhile, they neglect their internal environment, failing to provide an engaging, challenging and appealing workplace.


Enters talent management. A grey area where an HR manager meets a Talent Manager/Chief Happiness Officer. Confusing? Yes. And if it's confusing for the person actually holding that position, imagine what it does to the employees he or she is supposed to be engaging.


So, we came up with 25 ideas that can save a manager in need of some inspiration. Enjoy!

1.      Assign company values

Assign one of your company's values to a certain employee, every month, based on a peer-voting process. The person who best represented that value can be set as an example and be publicly acknowledged for his actions.

 

2.      Have teams create their own set of values

Designing your own game rules makes playing a lot more fun. Team synergy is not an easy objective to attain, and it's definitely not a rapid one. But it is essential to the end-game objective and to the overall performance of the project. Having teams create a team culture, based on 2-3 commonly agreed values or ground rules can help nurture and speed up that process.

 

3.      Encourage personal projects

Give employees a 1-2 h/ day window to pursue their own projects. Having people from different departments connecting and bouncing ideas can help get a new perspective. Projects and initiatives can get new directions, encouraging a creativity and energy flow1 that would only benefit the rest of the working hours. Ever heard of the Blue Sky program?

 

4.      Assign a buddy/mentor for every newcomer

An important part of the onboarding process is having someone answer some really important questions. Questions that someone would be hesitant to simply ask a manager. Building a trustworthy relationship with someone with more experience in that company can help guide the newcomer. This way he or she can better adapt and grow part of the team.

 

5.      Have themed office days

For the more open-minded companies, this initiative can bring a lot of fun and increase employee loyalty. Bring your [insert object/person here] to work or Chocolate [insert day here] can boost up employee morale and kill monotony at work.

 

6.      Have team photos

Have photos of your team on a wall, or frame them around the office. Group photos, funny photos, events photos or random photos snapped when people weren't watching. It's a cultural element that can encourage and foster work relationships and employee engagement.

 

7.      Encourage charity

I got an email the other day, after downloading a resource online that simply made my day. The awesome people at Network For Good came up with a Corporate Charity Gift Card. You can personalize your own company gift card and reward employees by allowing them to make a charitable donation to an organization of their choice. Take Aveda's example. The company came up with a cause that was aligned with their company's mission, empowered employees to team up and raise money for that cause, in a friendly but competitive manner. And it worked.

 

8.      Encourage volunteering

If you find yourself doubting the classical money-to-charity approach, you should try the new volunteer-for-a-cause angle. Give your employees a couple of days a month to volunteer for a cause they support. Here's a great reference article.

 

9.      Raise salaries

I'm sure at least half of the people reading this article will have an eyebrow up at this point. Bear with me. In 2008, attrition among AT&T Mobility's retail sales consultants cost millions annually and impacted the service experience. The company reduced costs, increased revenues and improved the customer experience by developing employees to be more inspired and engaged.

 

10.   Remind people your company's mission and values

It's important that you emphasize, once in a while, what your company stands for. People need to be reminded of why they are doing what they're doing.

 

11.   Recognize and encourage innovation

You might have heard some pretty inspiring ideas around the office. What about that project that came together so well and had some amazing improvements that no one initially thought of? Find out who came up with that idea. Give them a friendly "Good job!" or recognize them publicly for going the extra mile.

 

12.   Celebrate achievements

Big or small, they are the solid proof that the work people are putting in has meaning. No one can go through tasks and assignments for months, or even years without burning out. Refill their energy tanks with some recognition and celebrate their hard work. This is also a great way to glue together teams.

 

13.   Celebrate people

Birthdays, promotions, retirements, newcomers welcoming, there are plenty of important moments where people can be put at the front of the company. They make the company and it's a great and relaxing way of showing them that they matter.

 

14.   Give and receive feedback

Yes, everyone knows that and everyone talks about it. But it's really hard to implement. You're dealing with peoples' work, their position, their emotions and key success factors. It's a dangerous mix that the wrong feedback can cause to explode. Keep it simple. Offer a framework or a system that employees can use with confidence and honesty. Let them know you value their opinion and, most importantly, act on that feedback. More thoughts on feedback.

 

15.   Try some unusual employee engagement ideas

It's the small things that can sometime make a difference. Like having colored mugs at work or an awesome air freshener.

16.   Show respect

This should be the cornerstone for every office interaction. Especially when it comes to people in different hierarchies. Read more about Respect In The Workplace.

 

17.   Empower your employees

Nothing creates a greater sense of responsibility and ownership like having the decision power. Don't be afraid to let people be their own leader. It's surely a great way to build trust, as opposed to micro-management.

 

18.   Support enthusiasm in the workplace

Hire enthusiastic people. Encourage people to actively manifest joy and positive emotions.

 

19.   Encourage learning

Challenge and support employees in learning and developing their skills. Not only will you have a motivated and well-prepared workforce but you'll see an increase in employee happiness and employee1 engagement.

 

20.   Get social

Go out, have fun, have team buildings and weekend competitions! It can be really overwhelming to work, work, work 8-12h a day and crave a weekend that passes in a blink of an eye. Join sports competitions and encourage team playing activities.

 

21.   Make sure that people have all the resources they need

This doesn't sound like other typical employee engagement ideas but it has an important purpose. You need to make sure that you have the basics covered before you move on to other, more abstract, ideas. Equip your employees with the tools and systems that will make their job easier. This way, you'll get them to invest their energy into doing great work, instead of wasting precious time.

 

22.   Ask the people who really know employee engagement

Being as this is a fairly new business component, you should trust the experts. Consult the right people to help you build a solid employee engagement strategy.

 

23.   Get answers from your employees as well

This is related to feedback but it's more of an indirect feedback. Monitor and analyze your employees, your teams and the overall workspace. You'll get some essential pointers into what works and what you can improve.

 

24.   Build long-term engagement

Don't settle for a quick fix. Develop a long-term employee engagement strategy with clear objectives and action steps for more than a year, then re-evaluate and build on it.

 

25.   Try and try again

We've based this advice on our experience and the experience of others that we've worked it. However, what works for one company might not work for another. It's important that you try and adapt, until you find the perfect angle for your employee engagement strategy.

 

Takeaway

The basic HR processes, recruitment & selection, on-boarding & training, performance management, performance appraisal, rewards and recognition and actual employee management leave little or no time for employee happiness or employee engagement.
