[HM:256459] Zoom In and Zoom out

By Junaid Tahir

On the mobile phone or camera, the zoom in feature is used to take the picture of a specific object. You ignore other objects because your point of focus is this particular object. On the contrary, the zoom out feature is used in order to capture more wider area so as to cover more and more objects. This is a picture taking technique but do you know that we use the same technique with our brain in order to make mental pictures about objects and people? Here are a couple of examples:

  1.  You have been very supportive to this friend in his/her tragic moments in the past so many times however couldn't met his/her expectations at a specific difficult situation and then he/she told you that you are the most irresponsible or disloyal person. At this particular moment your friend has 'Zoomed-in' too much in your personality that he/she is only able to see and judge about your carelessness, incapability or betrayal trait. However, ideally, he should 'Zoom-out' look at your overall personality and remember the things which you have done for him/her in the past. In this case, his Zoom-In attitudes is very much inappropriate and you are not happy about it.
  2.  Your friend told you that tires making company ABC-Tires produce worst tires as he had recently tire burst case within three months of purchase. Based on this you made the perception that this tire company is most awful company. You ignore the fact that this company is selling thousands of tires daily. If their fault rate was this much high, the company should have been banned by the authorities. Also, you ignored that your friend might have driven his car on such an area where some sharp thing (blade, pin, nails etc) has caused the tire burst. So basically you fell under the trap of same Zoom-In thing. By the way, I am not saying to ignore the tire burst thing completely; what I am emphasizing on is that don't make an All-Positive or All-Negative image about someone or something. Give proper weight to all associated factors to conclude things.

Specifically for professionals here are two examples about using the Zoom-in Zoom-out tool.
1-    Use the zoom-in tool when you intend to draw your management's attention to a specific part of the large project which they are ignoring. This is to help them understand the low level details of the project. For example, if the boss asking that your project is over-budgeted then you can elaborate the micro level expenses of the project using Zoom-In.
2-   Use the zoom-out tool to let your field staff understand the big picture of the project so that he can perform their activities with more maturity. This will improve their mental horizon too. Article written by Junaid Tahir

Overall it is highly recommended to use this tool whenever you are going to conclude something whether small or big. Remeber, small mistakes sometimes lead to big disasters. Hence, carefully analyze the situation and see if you are too much zoomed in or too much zoomed out? Make sure your conclusions are based on fair assessment of the situation. Also remember that sometimes you don't even have to zoom-in or zoom-out since you are already at neutral level to judge the situation.

[HM:256458] The Importance of Open Communication

Open communication is vital in every relationship. Having an open communication between parents and children is one of the best thing in life. Sharing feelings, thoughts and ideas binds them more, strengthens their love and widens understanding though they are apart. It is not too late yet if you are not used to it, you could start practicing good communication with your loved ones today. And, if you are consistent to it definitely everything will follow.

Parents plan and do everything that is best for their children. So, even if they do not ask their children to return the favor for all their cares, their children usually thinks what is best for their parents especially by the time that they are no longer staying with their parents and cannot immediately respond to their parents needs as much as they love to. Elderly care topics like finding the right  in-home health care and other relevant topics for elderly needs could easily be tackled to parents though they are still on their productive and active age if there is an open communication between parents and children.

Having a great relationship and good communication with your parents with the assurance of your care though you will be miles apart in the future and opening the elderly care topics with them as early as possible will open their minds and let them understand better of their future needs. They could even help you choose of the right facilities for their future needs like nursing homes that offers great nursing home services.

If your parents sense that you care and love them and your plans is for their best, for them to live a healthy, happy and longer lives, these will act as their motivators to be on state that you want them to be and, will love and understand you more. Open communication between children and parents especially when parents are on their senior years is much more needed than any other stages in life, hope everyone will understand its importance.

Re: [HM:256466] NICE REPLY FROM MUKESH AMBANI

why are you posting texts with irritating background colors, its hard to read..:p

On Sat, Jun 29, 2013 at 9:58 PM, Yusuf M <thegreatyusuf@gmail.com> wrote:

A reply from Mukesh Ambani (Reliance Group) to a pretty girl seeking a rich husband

A young and pretty lady posted this on a popular forum:

Title: What should I do to marry a rich guy?

I'm going to be honest of what I'm going to say here.

I'm 25 this year. I'm very pretty, have style and good taste. I wish to marry a guy with 100 crore annual salary or above.

You might say that I'm greedy, but an annual salary 2 crore is considered only as middle class now days..

My requirement is not high. Is there anyone in this forum who has an income of 100 crore annual salary? Are you all married?

I wanted to ask: what should I do to marry rich persons like you?

Among those I've dated, the richest is 50 crore annual income, and it seems that this is my upper limit.

If someone is going to move into high cost residential area on the west of New York City Garden(?), 50 crore annual income is not enough.

I'm here humbly to ask a few questions:
1) Where do most rich bachelors hang out? (Please list down the names and addresses of bars, restaurant, gym)
2) Which age group should I target?
3) Why most wives of the riches are only average-looking? I've met a few girls who don't have looks and are not interesting, but they are able to marry rich guys.

4) How do you decide who can be your wife, and who can only be your girlfriend? (my target now is to get married)

Ms. Pooja i Chohan.

A philosophical reply from Mukesh Ambani-

Dear Ms. Pooja,
I have read your post with great interest. Guess there are lots of girls out there who have similar questions like yours. Please allow me to analyse your situation as a professional investor.

My annual income is more than 100 crore, which meets your requirement, so I hope everyone believes that I'm not wasting time here.

From the standpoint of a business person, it is a bad decision to marry you. The answer is very simple, so let me explain.

Put the details aside, what you're trying to do is an exchange of "beauty" and "money" : Person A provides beauty, and Person B pays for it, fair and square.

However, there's a deadly problem here, your beauty will fade, but my money will not be gone without any good reason. The fact is, my income might increase from year to year, but you can't be prettier year after year.

Hence from the viewpoint of economics, I am an appreciation asset, and you are a depreciation asset. It's not just normal depreciation, but exponential depreciation. If that is your only asset, your value will be much worse 10 years later.

By the terms we use in Wall Street, every trading has a position, dating with you is also a "trading position".
If the trade value dropped we will sell it and it is not a good idea to keep it for long term - same goes with the marriage that you wanted. It might be cruel to say this, but in order to make a wiser decision any assets with great depreciation value will be sold or "leased".

Anyone with over 100 crore annual income is not a fool; we would only date you, but will not marry you. I would advice that you forget looking for any clues to marry a rich guy. And by the way, you could make yourself to become a rich person with 100 crore annual income. This has better chance than finding a rich fool.

Hope this reply helps.

Mukesh Ambani

[HM:256454] Resolving Conflicts

Problems, problems… be it home or workplace, life is full of them. Whenever there is a problem, the most common thing people tend to do is

1.           Get afraid or uncomfortable and wish it would go away

2.           Feeling that they have to come up with an answer and it has to be the right answer so they end up getting confused and disturbed.

3.           Looking for someone to blame. Being faced with a problem becomes a problem. And that's a problem because, in fact, there are always going to be problems!

The reason we don't feel comfortable dealing with conflict is because a feeling of something-bad going to happen plagues us. Little do we know that the goal of a good problem-solving process is to make us competent enough to tackle problems.

There are two important things to remember about problems and conflicts: they happen all the time. Any relationship, be it personal or professional is bound to have problems. Problems are nothing but opportunities to improve the system and the relationships. If you look at problems under this light, then you will not get worried about dealing with a problem.

The most common mistake in problem solving is trying to find a solution right away. That's a mistake because it tries to put the solution at the beginning of the process, when what we need is a solution at the end of the process.

The 1…2…3s

1. Identify The Issues.

Be clear about what the problem is. Remember that different people might have different views of what the issues are. Everybody is entitled to hold his or her opinion.

2. Understand Everyone's Interests.

This is a critical step that is usually missing. Interests are the needs that you want satisfied by any given solution. We often ignore our true interests as we become attached to one particular solution. The best solution is the one that satisfies everyone's interests. This is the time for active listening. Put down your differences for a while and listen to each other with the intention to understand. Separate the naming of interests from the listing of solutions.

3. List The Possible Solutions (Options)

This is the time to do some brainstorming. There may be lots of room for creativity. Separate the listing of options from the evaluation of the options.

4. Evaluate The Options.

What are the pluses and minuses? Honestly! Separate the evaluation of options from the selection of options.

5. Select An Option Or Options.

What's the best option, in the balance? Is there a way to combine a number of options together for a more satisfactory solution?

6. Document The Agreement(S).

Don't rely on memory. Writing it down will help you think through all the details and implications.

7. Agree On Contingencies, Monitoring, And Evaluation.

Conditions may change. Make contingency agreements about foreseeable future circumstances. How will you monitor compliance and follow-through? Create opportunities to evaluate the agreements and their implementation.Like you could say, "Let's try it this way for three months and then look at it."

Tips

  • Firstly analyse the problem. What is this that triggered of this problem? Situation, people or something else? When you have identified the problem, think of how you can deal with it.
  • Define the problem. Think of how you can deal with the opposite party and settle the problem amicably.
  • Decide whether you want to confront the person/ party who isbothering you (It is usually better to air grievances in the open than to let them aggravate). It also will ensure a healthy working relationship…till the next conflict, of course.
  • Speak to the other person calmly, politely and rationally. Focus on the situation and facts, avoiding gossip and personal attacks.
  • Be careful not to express hostility in your posture, facial expression or tone. Be assertive without being aggressive.
  • Listen to the other person carefully: What is she trying to say? Be sure you understand her position. Think what you would have done and how you have reacted if you were in her shoes.
  • Express interest in what the other person is saying. You can acknowledge her ideas without necessarily agreeing or submitting.
  • Communicate clearly what you want, offering positive suggestions and recommendations.
  • Speak to your supervisor if a problem with a difficult co-worker seriously threatens your work, but avoid whining.
  • When you are dealing with problematic personalities, try to understand what motivates their behaviour and then tailor your actions to work with that personality type. Once you grasp why people behave as they do, you will be able to interact with them more effectively.
  • Be firm with bullies at work – don't allow them to pressure you into doing anything unwanted. Be forceful in your opinions, but act with a bit of caution.
  • Keep away from office politics. Getting into them is easy but getting out is very difficult.

Effective problem solving does take some time and attention more of the latter than the former. Take it right and you'll find yourself in good shape for the straightaway that follows. Take it too fast and you may not be in as good shape. Working through this process is not always a strictly linear exercise. You may have to cycle back to an earlier step. For example, if you're having trouble selecting an option, you may have to go back to thinking about the interests.

The more difficult and important the problem, the more helpful and necessary it is to use a disciplined process. If you're just trying to decide where to go out for lunch, you probably don't need to go through these seven steps! Don't worry if it feels a bit unfamiliar and uncomfortable at first. You'll have lots of opportunities to practice because life never ceases to have problems!

[HM:256453] Do You Treat People Fairly ?

By Junaid Tahir
A friend of mine is CEO of a medium size company, he says that in order to have deep understanding of the work at all levels of the company he tries to work in all domains in the company. This gives him insight of the tasks being done, associated complications, challenges and wisdom to resolve issues and optimize processes. He was telling that the job of their receptionist is tough as it involves a lot of patience. Some weeks back he sat at the reception and received the calls from their clients. Assuming that their call is being attended by the receptionist the customers talked as if they were talking to their servant. They were using harsh, rude or indecent words because of the faults related to the company products. However as soon as he introduced that he is the CEO of the company, the tone of the caller changed immediately.

While I listened to this story, I pondered that we all do the same thing in life. Our speaking tone is based on the social, professional or economical status of the person we are talking to. Which simply means that we don't treat people fairly and equally. We have a different way of communication for different people.
This reminds me of another story: Once a protocol officer asked a lady on how she would greet the Queen of Holland when the Queen visits their city; she said that she has only one set of manner and she uses it all the time and does not want to learn a special protocol to meet and greet the Queen.

So the bottom line is that we should have one set of ethical manners for all. We should be kind, humble and loving equally regardless of the social and educational background, regardless of the current economical and professional post. Humanity deserves equality and all of us should endeavor for the same.

I wrote a similar article earlier about judging people fairly. I believe that if we avoid being judgmental, we will start behaving fairly with all people. Remember, Judging people is the theoretical thing and won't make an external effect until you start showing this to others by treating them unfairly. That means Judging is more of an observatory and thought process stuff whereas treating people is the behavioral and practical thing. Judging wrongly pollutes your brain and treating wrongly pollutes the society hence both should be avoided.

So treat the rich and the poor, the attractive and the unattractive, educated, non-educated and less educated all the same, because each one is the creation of God Himself. Each soul requires fairness. How you treat them, is a reflection of what kind of a person you are !

Re: [HM:256466] NICE REPLY FROM MUKESH AMBANI

Good one..
