Re: [HM:258127] Excel ??

this is because some times you open excel file directly from outlook attachment, and it opens in read only mode.
You need to click on "enable editing" tab just on the top , below the file name bar to do cut paste or any other editing work.

[HM:258116] The 3 Skills Every Child Needs for Good Behavior

Good Behavior is not Magic—It's a Skill The 3 Skills Every Child Needs for Good Behavior

When you have a child who acts out and is disrespectful or disruptive, it's easy to compare him to the so-called "good kids" who never seem to get into trouble or give their parents grief. Many people feel hopeless about the possibility of ever teaching their child to "magically" become the kind of well-behaved member of the family they envisioned before they had him.

It's actually the learning process associated with consequences that changes the behavior.

The truth is that good behavior isn't magic—you can't just wave a wand and turn your child into who you want him to be. Rather, good behavior is a skill that can be learned, just like carpentry, teaching or nursing. I believe three of the most important skills for children to learn as a foundation for good behavior are: how to read social situations, how to manage emotions, and how to solve problems appropriately. If your child can learn to master these three tasks with your help, he will be well on his way to functioning successfully as an adult.

Related: How to teach your child the skill of good behavior.

Skill #1: Reading Social Situations
The ability to read social situations is important because it helps your child avoid trouble and teaches him how to get along with others. If he can walk into a classroom, lunchroom, playground or a dance, read what's going on there, and then decide how he's going to interact in that environment in an appropriate way, he's already halfway there. So if your child sees a bunch of kids who usually tease and bully others, the skill of reading social situations will help him stay away from that group, rather than gravitate toward it.

Parents can help their kids develop these skills by getting them to read the looks on people's faces at the mall or a restaurant, for example. If your child can learn to see who looks angry, frustrated or bored, two things will happen: the first is that he will be able to identify how people might be feeling. Secondly, he'll learn that he should try to identify other people's emotions. Both are integral in learning how to read social situations.

Related: Calm parenting in any situation.

Skill #2: Managing Emotions:
It's critical for your child to learn how to manage his emotions appropriately as he matures. Managing your emotions means that it's not OK to punch a hole in the wall because you're angry; it's not OK to curse at your dad because he took your iPod away. Children need to learn that just because they feel bad or angry, it does not give them the right to hurt others.

    Ask the Right Questions
If your child calls his little sister a nasty name, it's your job to first sit down and ask, "What did you see going on that you thought you needed to do that?" Not, "How did you feel?" but "What was going on?" You'll find that usually this type of behavior is generally self-centered. Perhaps your child's little sister is getting more attention or she's watching a show and he wants the TV, or she's playing with the video games and he wants to play them. When your child does not know how to deal with that situation and he becomes nasty or abusive, it's time for you to step in and put a stop to it. And I think you should very clearly state, "Just because you're angry, it doesn't give you the right to call your sister a nasty name." That's an important, direct way of teaching the skill of managing emotions.
What Giving Consequences Does (and Doesn't) Accomplish

I believe that consequences are part of accountability. In other words, your child should know that if the inappropriate behavior happens again, he will be held accountable. Saying that, I don't think people change simply because they're punished or are given consequences. Although parents often focus on them, consequences alone are not enough. Rather, it's the learning process associated with the consequences that changes a child's behavior. So it's the part of your child's thinking process that says, "Next time I'm upset, if I call Sarah a name, I'm going to be punished. Instead, I can just go to my room and cool down."

Here's the truth: you can punish kids until the cows come home, but it's not going to change their behavior. That's because the problem is actually not the behavior—the problem lies in the way kids think. This faulty thinking then gets externalized into how they behave. If you punish them for the behavior and neglect to challenge the way they think about the problem—or discuss what their options are for dealing with that problem effectively in the future—then really, what are you doing? You're punishing your child, but he hasn't learned anything and he's not going to do anything differently. In fact, he's probably just going to do it again when you're not looking.

Related: How to give consequences that really work.

"What Will You Do Differently Next Time?"
I think it's very important that you talk to your child about what he can do differently the next time he feels angry or frustrated. This tool is something I developed as part of The Total Transformation, and it's an important way to focus on changing your child's behavior. When you use this technique, it encourages your child to come up with other things he or she might do instead of using ineffective behavior. By the way, when you have this talk with your child, it should be a pretty businesslike conversation—it's not all smiley and touchy feely; it shouldn't be abusive or negative, either. Stick to the facts and ask, "What can you do differently next time?"

Skill #3: Teach Problem Solving Skills

There's No Such Thing as "Good Kids" and "Bad Kids"

I believe that the kids who are labeled "good" are children who know how to solve their problems and manage their behavior and social life, and the kids who are labeled "bad" are kids who don't know how to solve those problems. A child is often labeled "the bad kid" when he's developed ineffective actions to solve the problems that other kids solve appropriately. So this child may turn to responses that are disrespectful, destructive, abusive, and physically violent. In my opinion, there's no such thing as good kids or bad kids, there are simply kids who have learned effective ways of solving life's problems, and kids who have not.

As they develop, children have to continually adjust their problem-solving skills and learn new ones. For instance, for a three year old, being told "no" is the biggest problem in her life. She stomps her feet, she throws a tantrum. Eventually, she has to learn to deal with that problem and manage the feelings associated with it. And so those tasks continue for five-year-olds who have to deal with the first day of school and for nine-year-olds who have to change in gym. They continue for 12- and 13-year-olds when they're at middle school, which is a much more chaotic environment than they have ever faced before.

Related: How to teach kids problem-solving skills.

I've devoted much of my career to dealing with kids who behaved inappropriately, all the way from kids who were withdrawn and depressed to kids who were aggressive and acted out physically. I believe a very key element in helping children change their behavior is for parents to learn techniques where they help their child identify the problem they're facing. Together, you look at how to solve problems and come up with other solutions. So talk to your child about the problem at hand and how to solve it—not just about the emotion your child is feeling.

In the end, there is no magic solution to good behavior. The secret is really in teaching kids how to solve problems; good behavior is simply one of the fruits on that problem-solving tree. Your goal as a parent is to give your child the tools to learn good behavior. It's never too late to get these tools, but know this: if your child can't read a situation in the ninth grade and doesn't know how to respond, reacts by getting aggressive, and then gets into trouble, how do you think they are going to handle it when they're an adult and their boss tells them something they don't want to hear? That's why it's important for you as parent not to "wish away" the bad behavior and to start teaching your child the skills he needs to change his behavior for good.

[HM:258115] Acil Durumlarda Hayatta Kalma Teknikleri

Hayatta Kalma Teknikleri

Merhaba;

Acil durumlarda kullanılacak aletleri (can yeleği, vb) en yüksek kaliteden alınmalıdır.

[HM:258114] Better Choices for Weight Control

Tip of the day
Weight Control :: #40
By Al Loomis from Denver USA.

The Best Diet is no diet at all but a lifetime commitment to better choices!

Many studies have proven that all diets have a temporary effect! The secret to losing weight is to make permanent choices in what we do. Here we have some simple long term commitments:

• Commit to whole wheat bread

• Drink fruit juices instead of soft drinks

• Always select fruit as a dessert

• Start most meal with a large salad

• Use whole grain pasta, bread and rice

• Take longer to eat. It takes time for your body to send its satisfaction signal

• Always park your car far rather than near

• Use the stairs for anything less than 4 stories

• Think positive about all of the choices above.

Forming good habits is the answer to long term health!

[HM:258113] 25 Signs You are Already Successful and You’re Simply Unaware

Communication Motivation by

We have all had that period in our lives where we feel, regardless of what happens, we simply have nothing positive going for us. It's easy to criticize yourself in just about anything–from your competence in the workplace to how you deal with situations at home–and this can make it easy to become clouded to our own successes in life.

This kind of constant action and lack of clarity can make it easy to believe that you are a failure, even when all the evidence in your life–personally and professionally–points to other conclusions. If you are too busy in life fighting fires, you'll likely never make the time to actually appreciate your own success and accomplishments. You could already be successful and just not realize it. Here are some signs that is the case:

1. You aren't controlled by your income.

Many people feel like they are tied to that next paycheque to make things work for them. If you are able to go day-to-day without the worry that you won't have enough money to last until the end of the month, then you are most definitely a success! You might not be able to afford a Rolex, but if you aren't living from week-to-week you are a success.

2. You don't seek praise.

Seeking praise from loved ones and colleagues is something that we typically grow out of in our teenage years. If you aren't hanging around waiting to get the proverbial pat on the back at work or at home, you are a more successful individual than you might even know. Being able to do your part without looking for praise is a strong sign of mental security.

3. You suffer less drama.

Look back even just a year in your life: are you finding that things are quieter? At home and at work? If this is the case then you can probably say that your life is pretty successful–a lack of chaos points to order and harmony.

4. You have a plan.

Success is built on structure and having a long-term plan to get to where you want to be. If you actually have a framework to follow in your life to reach your life goals, you are already pretty successful. Most people don't plan ahead!

5. You crave more.

For someone who might feel like they aren't doing well very in life, if you tend to look for more from any situation you are already on your way to success. Ambition and a desire for knowledge points to a determined individual who seeks to better themselves.

6. You are an early bird.

You know the old saying. The early bird catches the worm. If you are to make your life a success, you can't be starting each day in the afternoon. When you find that you are jumping out of bed, ready to attack the day, you can probably point to a successful lifestyle and personality.

7. You are socially active.

Success tends to come in many different ways, not just your rank or your pay packet. If you are able to get involved in many different situations with a variety of social circles you can point to a healthy and harmonious life–people don't tend to stick around toxic personalities.

8. You offer mutual respect.

Success tends to come from your own experiences in life, including going through stresses and difficulties. If you understand the value of treating others with respect, you already harness one of the most important aspects of success.

9. You wish to help others.

Again, your success in this world goes far beyond the cost of your car. If you are able to provide people with a solid base to work with, and act as a pillar of strength for colleagues, success is not too far off.

10. You are driven.

Anybody without an engine and a willingness to get through the hard times and the difficulties will struggle to succeed. If you don't mind getting your sleeves rolled up and your hands dirty, you are better off than you think.

11. You possess confidence without arrogance.

The big difference between a successful person and someone who believes they are successful is the way they conduct themselves. If you can show some genuine humility for others, whilst inspiring those who are struggling, you are already a successful individual

12. You have fought back.

We have already touched on how failure can be the point needed to succeed. You need to hit the bottom before you can reach the top. Being able to battle back from a position of failure to success–any success–is a sign of an iron-willed individual with the nous to succeed in life.

13. You strive to improve.

Many people fall into the trap of believing that they "made it". When you always look to improve on the previous performance, even if it was spectacular, you are setting yourself up to be a long-term success.

14. You have discipline.

Discipline can only come from being a success and seeing how things have gone in the past. Learning how not to make mistakes and how to make the right call is vital to being a long-term success.

15. You preach patience.

Patience is a virtue that the most successful people emit on a large-scale basis. Without patience, it can be hard to ever make the type of impact that you originally intended in any work or personal environment.

16. You can say no.

We spoke earlier about the power of being able to avoid needing to be praised–this is the same ideal. If you are able to say no then you have already avoided the need to please everyone. This is the sign of a successful individual.

17. You manage time well.

Time management is a sign of long-term success, and being able to use the time in any given day to be productive is the sign of a successful person. Capable of dealing with plenty of tasks in any given day? You are already a success.

18. You have successful friends.

Success around you is the easiest way to inspire yourself. If you find yourself surrounded by those who are also doing well it can be easier to actually improve and develop yourself in the right manner.

19. You don't blame others.

You have reached a point in your life where you fully understand what it means to take ownership of your actions and not target others for your frustrations and failures. That comes about from being active rather than passive, and noticing your inner power to transform your life. It also speaks to your ability to prevent the environment from leading you down a direction you do not desire.

20. You don't waste your time.

Long gone are the days when you let others drag you along and make you invest your time in activities you deemed boring or even counterproductive to your self-development and self-esteem. Your greater sense of direction empowers you to know what you want without needing other´s approval.

21. You are assertive.

You understand that simply saying yes or no is not enough. Explaining your reasons in a clear manner is essential for others to understand that you are an individual with your own thoughts and needs. This does not mean being inflexible, but while being understanding you should never let anyone bend your way.

22. You stay positive.

You have learnt the hard way that being negative or skeptical to justify your potential defeats and failures does not serve any purpose. Not only it does make you feel unable and anxious, but also does affect the final outcome. By being positive and honest at pursuing your goals you will unleash the true achiever within you.

23. You take care of your health.

Quitting harmful activities that stop you from working towards the brighter future you have always dreamt is a powerful step. Be it smoking, taking drugs, eating too much saturated fats and sugar, or not exercising, you understand that leaving all of those behind will turn you into a stronger individual with greater drive and willpower.

24. You don't seek a relationship to solve your personal issues.

It is easy to hide our failures behind someone who loves us. But, it is a bit immature for both sides in a relationship to stop tackling the real issues that harm each other's lives. It is not a good idea to avoid helping the other towards becoming a better person just because it is easier not doing it or because "things are just fine as they are".

25. You are mature.

When bad situations unfold in the workplace, or you need to deal with the individual who you have a problem with. A sign of success is being able to put personal grievances to the side for professional gain.

It's always important to remind yourself that success isn't something that can be judged so materially. If you are able to look at your lifestyle and understand that you do things in a mature, social and effective manner then you are already far more successful than any slap on the back will ever make you feel.

Success comes from acceptance of your own skills and abilities, not what somebody you might never have met before tells you.

[HM:258112] Selfies Can Harm You --- LifeHack

Leisure Lifestyle by

It is no doubt that "selfies" have been taking over almost everybody's lives on the internet. Selfies are flooding your Facebook and Twitter feed, becoming a nuisance to people's daily lives. While these dreaded selfie-takers may think their little activity is harmless fun, little do they know they are actually harming themselves in many ways with each and every selfie they snap.

One may wonder how something so simple as taking a picture of yourself could cause any harm. Let's start out with some of the obvious ways. In 2014, there were numerous reports of deaths caused by people taking selfies while doing something ridiculous. Here are just a few of them:

  • In April 2014, a Russian amateur photographer (17 years old) climbed atop a railway bridge in Saint Petersburg. She ended up losing her balance and falling to her death after taking a selfie.
  • In May, 2014, the pilot of a Cessna 150K and his passenger were killed when the pilot was distracted taking selfies and lost control of the plane.
  • In August 2014, a Polish couple fell off a cliff in Portugal after crossing a safety barrier to take a selfie. They were survived by their two children who were present at the scene.

Due to what seemed like a fun picture idea to some people at the time, is now a haunting reminder to family and friends that were left behind.

With the year 2014 being proclaimed as "The Year of The Selfie", you can only imagine how many other people have gotten themselves in to a bad situation for the sake of a silly photo, or in some cases not so silly – referring to selfies where the person has some sort of weapon or explosive involved. Yes, it has been done. There have been other reports on people posing for a selfie with a gun to their head, resulting in death, or severe injury (shocking, right?).

Besides the psychological harm that can be caused to the families of the people killing themselves with selfies, there have also been studies shown that selfies have links to narcissism and self-objectification. While this is a relatively small issue, it is something that is being noticed more and more by professionals. Follow this link to learn more about the connection between narcissism and selfies.

More serious psychological disorders to selfie-taking individuals include Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Body Dysmorphic Disorder (a chronic mental health condition in which the sufferer obsesses over perceived flaws with their body). To read more on this mental affliction, click here.

An extreme example of OCD and BDD is (now 20 year old) Danny Bowman. In his quest of taking the perfect selfie, Danny dropped out of school, lost 28 pounds, and spent up to 10 hours a day taking over 200 selfies, just trying to capture the perfect one. After months of selfie-taking, and countless fights with his parents, Danny soon realized that he could not ever take the perfect selfie. He eventually tried to commit suicide.

While this is obviously an extreme case, the possibility of similar more milder cases is extremely high. People are spending less time interacting with others because they are so caught up in themselves. What starts out small could turn into something so big and out of control, like what happened to Danny Bowman.

People are spending so much time taking glamour shots of themselves that they are letting this world slip right pass them. I, for one, will no longer stand by and watch the selfie take over. We have to stand up together, as Anti-Selfie Supporters and fight, not only for ourselves, but also for the people being plagued by the selfie. If we do not stand up for them, nobody else will.

#StopTheSelfie.

[HM:258111] The Message from Ball Games

Sports and Recreation :: #2357

By Mike Swindlehurst from Bournemouth United Kingdom

Ball games
I have played Soccer, Tennis, Cricket, Squash, Badminton and the 3 most useful tips that were given to me were: -

- Put all you have into looking for a spot or other such marking on the ball until it leaves your racquet or bat ~ this prevents you taking your eye off the ball.

- It's never over 'til it's over ~ no matter what the score is' keep cool and keep up your effort ~ don't let your shoulders drop.

- Keep your cool and don't be tempted to try too hard, 95% of mistakes are caused by trying too hard. You must practice everyday until you are able to relax and let your body do what it wants to do.

What brought these to my attention, and were emphasized in a Bob Harman tennis book, was that I played my best tennis shots when we were knocking up, when the service was out and other such stress free moments.

[HM:258110] Contentment & Discontentment

First of all, understand discontentment. Discontent is caused by a constant multiplication of desires.

One desire leads to another until there's never a moment when you feel fulfilled.

Desires are like traps.

Because of endless desires relationships have become very fragile. There is a lot of irritability and anger due to:

• Selfish attachments (to possessions and people)

• Pride (attachment to a particular image of the self)

When there is discontentment, the heart can never be still & peaceful because wasteful, negative thoughts destroy peace.

Contentment is the result of spiritual awareness which allows you to recognize negativity. It changes your pattern of thinking. As you tap your huge inner potential, all desires are fulfilled and you regain your peace.

[HM:258109] Creating an Interactive Chart in Excel

Imagine you have a worksheet with lots of charts. And you want to make it look awesome & clean.
Solution?
Simple, create an interactive chart so that your users can pick one of many charts and see them.
Today let us

understand how to create an interactive chart using Excel.
PS: This is a revised version of almost 5 year old article – Select & show one chart from many.

A demo of our interactive Excel chart

First, take a look at the chart that you will be creating.
How to create interactive chart using Excel - Demo
Feeling excited? read on to learn how to create this.

Solution – Creating Interactive chart in Excel

  1. First create all the charts you want and place them in separate locations in your worksheet. Lets say your charts look like this.
Create charts in separate ranges like this...
  2. Now, select all the cells corresponding to first chart, press ALT MMD (Formula ribbon > Define name). Give a name like Chart1.
Select all cells corresponding to first chart and give them a name like Chart1
  3. Repeat this process for all charts you have, naming them like Chart2, Chart3
  4. In a separate range of cells, list down all chart names. Give this range a name like lstChartTypes.
  5. Add a new sheet to your workbook. Call it "Output".
  6. In the output sheet, insert a combo-box form control (from Developer Ribbon > Insert > Form Controls)
Insert combo-box form controls - Excel
  7. Select the combo box control and press Ctrl+1 (format control).
  8. Specify input range as lstChartTypes and cell link as a blank cell in your output sheet (or data sheet).

  10. Now, we need a mechanism to pull corresponding chart based on user selection. Enter a named range – selChart.
  11. Press ALT MMD or go to Formula ribbon > Define name. Give the name as selChart and define it as
    =CHOOSE(linked_cell, Chart1, Chart2, Chart3, Chart4)
PS: CHOOSE formula will select one of the Chart ranges based on user's selection (help).
  12. Now, go back to data & charts sheet. Select Chart1 range. Press CTRL+C to copy it.
  13. Go to Output sheet and paste it as linked picture (Right click > Paste Special > Linked Picture)
Pasting a picture link - Excel interactive chart tutorial
  14. This will insert a linked picture of Chart 1.
[Related: What is a picture link and how to use it?]
  15. Now, click on the picture, go to formula bar, type =selChart and press enter

[HM:258108] Proper Sitting Position While Driving

How to Adjust Seating to the Proper Position While Driving

Many drivers do not position themselves correctly in their cars and therefore seriously lack control and comfort while driving. A good driving position can actually help preventing accidents, improve safety should an accident occur, and improve driving comfort. To adjust to the proper seating position, use the following tips.

Steps

  1. Adjust Seating to the Proper Position While Driving Step 1 Version 4.jpg
    {"smallUrl":"http:\/\/pad2.whstatic.com\/images\/thumb\/3\/3e\/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-1-Version-4.jpg\/460px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-1-Version-4.jpg","bigUrl":"http:\/\/pad2.whstatic.com\/images\/thumb\/3\/3e\/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-1-Version-4.jpg\/760px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-1-Version-4.jpg","smallWidth":460,"smallHeight":345.34328358209,"bigWidth":760,"bigHeight":570.5671641791}
<img alt="Adjust Seating to the Proper Position While Driving Step 1 Version 4.jpg" src="http://pad2.whstatic.com/images/thumb/3/3e/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-1-Version-4.jpg/460px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-1-Version-4.jpg" data-srclarge="http://pad2.whstatic.com/images/thumb/3/3e/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-1-Version-4.jpg/760px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-1-Version-4.jpg">
    1
Wear proper clothing. Driving should be done with clothing that doesn't limit the driver. In the winter, coats can interfere with proper steering as well as with proper adjustment of the seat and the operation of seat belts. Choose light and comfortable clothes.
    • Footwear is obligatory. The shoes have to be placed snugly on the feet (unlike slippers) and fit nicely on the pedals (unlike boots, muddy soles, or high heels). A shoe with a thin but slightly dense sole is ideal.
    • The driver is also advised to wear a set of pants that run all the way down to the knee, even if it means wearing a set of pants over shorts or a swim-suit.
  2. Adjust Seating to the Proper Position While Driving Step 2 Version 4.jpg
    {"smallUrl":"http:\/\/pad1.whstatic.com\/images\/thumb\/8\/8c\/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-2-Version-4.jpg\/460px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-2-Version-4.jpg","bigUrl":"http:\/\/pad1.whstatic.com\/images\/thumb\/8\/8c\/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-2-Version-4.jpg\/760px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-2-Version-4.jpg","smallWidth":460,"smallHeight":345.34328358209,"bigWidth":760,"bigHeight":570.5671641791}
<img alt="Adjust Seating to the Proper Position While Driving Step 2 Version 4.jpg" src="http://pad1.whstatic.com/images/thumb/8/8c/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-2-Version-4.jpg/460px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-2-Version-4.jpg" data-srclarge="http://pad1.whstatic.com/images/thumb/8/8c/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-2-Version-4.jpg/760px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-2-Version-4.jpg">
    2
Position yourself correctly in the seat itself. Make sure you sit straight and that your buttocks and back are square and completely squeezed into the seat. This helps to avoid backaches, possible back injuries and maintains awareness during long drives.
  3. Adjust Seating to the Proper Position While Driving Step 3 Version 4.jpg
    {"smallUrl":"http:\/\/pad3.whstatic.com\/images\/thumb\/d\/d3\/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-3-Version-4.jpg\/460px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-3-Version-4.jpg","bigUrl":"http:\/\/pad2.whstatic.com\/images\/thumb\/d\/d3\/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-3-Version-4.jpg\/760px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-3-Version-4.jpg","smallWidth":460,"smallHeight":345.34328358209,"bigWidth":760,"bigHeight":570.5671641791}
<img alt="Adjust Seating to the Proper Position While Driving Step 3 Version 4.jpg" src="http://pad3.whstatic.com/images/thumb/d/d3/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-3-Version-4.jpg/460px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-3-Version-4.jpg" data-srclarge="http://pad2.whstatic.com/images/thumb/d/d3/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-3-Version-4.jpg/760px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-3-Version-4.jpg">
    3
Adjust the seat distance. The seat should always be positioned with regard to the pedals. Press the brake pedal fully with your right foot and fully depress the clutch (in a manual transmission car) or dead pedal (in an automatic). The distance should be adjusted so that with fully depressed pedals, your knees remain slightly bent (about 120 degrees).
    • To make sure your check is accurate, start the engine and press on the brakes a few times before performing the check to build up pressure.
    • If the knee straightens, you are too far back. If it's bent close to 90 degrees, it's too close.
    • A fully extended leg results in the knee locking-up. This reduces the leverage and feel of the pedals, increases effort, and puts you in risk of severe injuries to the feet in a collision;the straight knee will be fractured whereas the bent knee would fold down. Furthermore, the bone would project the shock up to the pelvic and lower spine.
    • A knee excessively bent (when the driver sits too close) at an angle of about 100 degrees, does not support the body effectively and results in bad blood circulation. It can also hit the under-dash in a collision.
    • The thighs should be placed as far apart as is comfortable. In small cars, most people can create a wide enough base as to lean their knees against the center console on one side and the door on the other.
    • The feet should be placed with the heels on the floor and the balls of the feet pressing against the pedals. The right foot in particular should be able to pivot between the throttle and brake pedal while the heel is placed roughly in front of the brakes. This might mean that you don't cover the brake pedal fully when pressing it and that pressing the throttle is done with the foot at an angle, contacting the pedal close to its lower edge. This is the correct way to utilize the feet.
    • The left foot should be resting over the dead-pedal whenever not working on the clutch (or, in an automatic, at all times). This increases support to the pelvis and allows the driver to brace the body by applying pressure against the footrest in corners or in events of strong braking instead of hanging onto the pedals or steering.
  4. Adjust Seating to the Proper Position While Driving Step 4 Version 4.jpg
    {"smallUrl":"http:\/\/pad2.whstatic.com\/images\/thumb\/b\/b4\/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-4-Version-4.jpg\/460px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-4-Version-4.jpg","bigUrl":"http:\/\/pad2.whstatic.com\/images\/thumb\/b\/b4\/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-4-Version-4.jpg\/760px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-4-Version-4.jpg","smallWidth":460,"smallHeight":345.34328358209,"bigWidth":760,"bigHeight":570.5671641791}
<img alt="Adjust Seating to the Proper Position While Driving Step 4 Version 4.jpg" src="http://pad2.whstatic.com/images/thumb/b/b4/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-4-Version-4.jpg/460px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-4-Version-4.jpg" data-srclarge="http://pad2.whstatic.com/images/thumb/b/b4/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-4-Version-4.jpg/760px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-4-Version-4.jpg">
    4
Adjust the rake of the seat. This should be as parallel as possible to the steering. It is impossible to reach a perfect adjustment (and it's also not really necessary), but by adjusting the rake of the seat to an upright angle of about 110-95 degrees, we can reach a suitable adjustment.
    • We cannot reach a perfect adjustment because placing the seat too upright will put pressure on the lower vertebrae, place our head too high, and because the steering itself is placed in an angle. We can adjust the seat back to a relatively upright position and then use the adjustment of the steering itself to place it as parallel to the back as possible.
    • After adjusting the seat, including the height and the adjustments to the steering itself (below), we check the adjustment in the following manner: We place the wrist of our hand just over the topmost portion of the wheel. We should be able to place the wrist flat over the wheel and even bend it somewhat over the rim, while still keeping the shoulders (shoulder-blades) against the seat's back. This should be done with the arm straight but without putting in excessive effort.
      • If our wrist only touches the face of the wheel (rather than be placed flat over it), or it we can only put the heel of the palm on the wheel, or if we need to lean our scapulae (shoulder-blades) forward -- we are too far back. This will make us lean forward somewhat when we steer.
      • If we can touch the top of the wheel with our forearm or touch the top of the wheel with the wrist with the hand bent, we are too close to the wheel.
      • In vehicles with large, horizontal steering rims (mainly trucks), we cannot reach such a posture and we just need to check that we can grip the topmost portion of the wheel without locking the elbow fully and without bouncing the scapulae forward.
  5. Adjust Seating to the Proper Position While Driving Step 5 Version 4.jpg
    {"smallUrl":"http:\/\/pad1.whstatic.com\/images\/thumb\/3\/3e\/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-5-Version-4.jpg\/460px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-5-Version-4.jpg","bigUrl":"http:\/\/pad2.whstatic.com\/images\/thumb\/3\/3e\/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-5-Version-4.jpg\/760px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-5-Version-4.jpg","smallWidth":460,"smallHeight":345.34328358209,"bigWidth":760,"bigHeight":570.5671641791}
<img alt="Adjust Seating to the Proper Position While Driving Step 5 Version 4.jpg" src="http://pad1.whstatic.com/images/thumb/3/3e/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-5-Version-4.jpg/460px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-5-Version-4.jpg" data-srclarge="http://pad2.whstatic.com/images/thumb/3/3e/Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-5-Version-4.jpg/760px-Adjust-Seating-to-the-Proper-Position-While-Driving-Step-5-Version-4.jpg">
    5
Adjust the steering height. Where adjustable, the steering height should be adjusted to as parallel to back angle, and to a clear view of the dashboard through the rim. The ideal adjustment should also allow us to grip the wheel properly (at 9 and 3, see below), with our palms just lower than our shoulders.

    6
Adjust the steering distance. Where adjustable, this should be adjusted with the steering wheel height, to as parallel to the back as possible. While gripping the wheel properly, our elbows should be bent at about 120 degrees. There should be a minimal clearance of 10" (and preferably 30cm) between the center of the steering hub and the base of the breastbone (sternum). It should also not be further away that 45 centimeter (17.7 in).

    7
Adjust the seat height. This should allow us to see forward clearly, while still having a clear view of the dashboard, and proper height relative to the wheel and pedals. In most cars, the proper height for forward vision should allow us to place five fingers (a hand width) between our head and the ceiling.
    • In cars with open or high ceiling, adjust so that you eyes are placed just above the center of the glass, without the visor obstructing your forward vision when open.
    • After readjusting the height, recheck the feet to make sure the height adjust had not compromised it.
  8. 8
Adjust the head restraints. Place the headrest to a height just above your eyelids, and (more importantly) -- as close to the head as possible (2-3cm). A head-restraint further than 7 centimeter (2.8 in) increases the risk of whiplash. Keep in mind that while driving our head bends forward a bit more. If you cannot adjust the head-restraint to the proper distance, you need to compensate by increasing the backrest tilt.

    9
    Make additional adjustments as necessary.
    • Lumbar support: Should provide equal pressure across the whole length of the back. For drivers with lumbar problems without such an adjustment, you can use one or two rolled towels.
    • Side Bolsters: Should be adjusted for the maximum possible hip support without limiting the ability to depress all pedals fully.
    • Seat base reclining: Should keep the thigh in full contact with the seat. Avoid too much reclining which will create pressure behind your knees, or interfere with strong braking (you should not apply pressure against the seat).
    • Pedal adjustments: Should allow operation of the pedals as described above as comfortably as possible. You should be able to place your heel roughly in front of the brakes, place your foot on the brakes with the slightest possible offset to the right, and pivot as easily as possible towards the throttle pedal on the right, while keeping your knee bent at about 100 degrees.

    10
Position your hands properly. Your hands should both be on the wheel, at the 9 and 3 position. This increases the leverage on the wheel to a maximum. Your palms should be placed against the outer diameter of the wheel and the thumbs should be lightly hooked on the cross-brace of the wheel.
    • Grip and stabilize the wheel not only with the thumbs and/or palms, but mainly with your fingers and fingertips. In general, keep the grip of the wheel as light as possible without losing your control over the wheel. This results in better control and less fatigue.
    • Keep both hands on the wheel. Steering with one hand makes the weight of the hand work on the wheel, for which the shoulder muscles must be used to keep the wheel steady, resulting in a twist of the spine, especially if you get into the (bad) habit of holding the wheel from its top.

    11
Wear your seat belt properly. Adjust the lap-belt as snugly as possible over the waist. The belt should be physically tightened and placed as low as possible, on the pelvic bones, rather than the soft belly.
    • The shoulder strap should be adjusted to the height, so that the mounting is higher than the shoulder, and that the strap itself is placed over the acromion (middle of the shoulder), which is felt as a socket midway between the arm and neck.
    • If the shoulder strap is placed on the neck or even on the collar bone (clavicle), it is too high and will cause fractures to the clavicle and cuts the neck.
    • If the strap is placed too low on the shoulder itself or on the arm/under the armpit, it will not support the body and cause severe cuts to the arm.
    • All passengers should be strapped, and little children need to be harnessed in the suitable child seats and boosters. There are also special straps for pets. There are also other points that are worthwhile for the passengers:
      • Head restraint adjustment
      • Window adjustment
      • Proper placing of limbs relative to airbags: Avoid placing feet over the passenger's airbag or placing hands in the way of the lateral or curtain airbags, etc...
      • Proper distance from the dashboard
      • Full and erected seating: Full contact of the back and the seat, and an erected rake angle for the front passenger, to avoid "submarining under the lap belt.
      • Awareness: Falling asleep is dangerous for passengers. The front passenger should be awake to monitor and assist the driver, and to avoid acute abdominal injuries in a collision, which are intensified when the person is asleep.
    • Not all seats of the car are equally safe. The middle-rear seat is considered safest, followed by the seat behind front passenger seat, then the seat behind the driver, the front passenger seat and the driver being in the greatest threat. This division changes in cars with additional seats (minivans) or when the middle-back lacks a diagonal or adjustable belt or a head-restraint.

    12
Check your visibility. With this position, your eyes will be placed in front of the center or upper half of the glass for improved visibility. Keep your eyes relaxed rather than trying and focus, and keep the eyes up rather than down. You will see more and further away, while still being aware of your surrounding with your peripheral vision.
    • Adjust your mirrors to give you a broad field of vision to the rear and sides (see in links below) at the glance of an eye or a slight tilt of the head (if you have a narrow field of vision due to illness or age). In some cars, you might also need to be ready to lean slightly forward or take a slight peek to the side ("Shoulder check") to make sure you see everything around while driving.

    13
Keep objects in the car low, on the floor, preferably at the front seat. Do not keep anything around the driver's seat, because it might slip under the pedals.
    • In general, anything not stock is not wanted: A convex mirror mounted on the center mirror, a padded cover of the steering wheel, things dangling about on your rear-view mirror -- these are all bad things that can also prove hazardous in an accident.
    • Windows, in this respect, are best either completely closed, slightly opened or almost fully opened, rather than half-way down, in which case the head of the driver or one of the passengers might hit it. Always keep one of your front windows slightly opened for fresh air.
    • Open windows on highways can create drag that impairs fuel consumption and even the stability of the car, so it's best to only keep one or two windows slightly opened at most.
    • On rugged terrain, the windows should be fully closed or fully opened to avoid rocking the window's bushings.
    • Windows, lights and spectacles should be kept clean.

    14
Adjust your rear-view mirrors to a minimal overlap and maximal visibility.
    • While it is possible to fit a quality, vacuum-adhesive interior mirror to view the back seat, in long drives with the whole family, it's best for the front passenger to be the one in charge of the inside of the car, and for the driver to focus himself on the road. Do not adjust your stock interior mirror to see the back seat and do not use wide-angle convex mirrors as well.
    • Likewise, avoid placing a child in the front seat, regardless of child restraints or airbags.

    15
Use the air-conditioning to demist fumes on the windshields, and to provide a comfortable environment. It's better to use the car heat in the winter instead of driving with heavy clothing that interferes with steering and with the function of the seat belt. Keep one window slightly open for fresh air both in the summer (for oxygen) and winter (for fresh cold air).
    • The air conditioning is there to be used -- open the A/C periodically, even in the winter, and open the heating periodically -- even in the summer -- to ensure proper mechanical function of the two over time.
    • A/C air recirculation is very efficient because is blows large amounts of air. However, you need some fresh air through the driver's window. Likewise, if the windscreen is very heavily misted, opening the A/C for fresh air (along with an open window) can do better. Using external circulation is also efficient when you try to cool down a very hot cabin before entering it.
    • The A/C can also clear out bad smells. A few minutes before you turn off the car, close the air conditioner and air circulation, but keep the fan blowing air. This will channel out waste in the air ducts via a little hose inside it. Likewise, in a hot summer day, it's worthwhile to keep the heating blowing full time with all windows and doors open, to refresh the cabin.
    • The heating is also a good choice for when the engine starts to overheat. In highways, stopping on the hard-shoulder is so perilous that it is better to keep on driving towards a safe stopping place, even in the price of causing damage to the car (like overheating the engine). Using the heating to disperse engine heat can help reaching a safe stopping place without the engine reaching critical levels of heat.
