Leaders are required to posses several supreme personality traits such as competence, commitment, courage, focus, generosity, passion, responsibility, vision, problem solving attitude and self-discipline. Below analogies are given for the leaders for their self audits which constitute for the transformation from 'effectiveness to greatness' as per Stephen R Covey's book "The 8th Habit®":

1-     The Great Leader is like the Lion: He does not fear in any kind of tragic circumstances and grabs the 'Lion's share' (market share for his company) and also gives his/her team the protection from other dangers. He faces the difficulties with courage, meets them, treats them and defeats them.

2-    The Great Leader is like the Foundation of a Building: He penetrates enough in the roots in order to strengthen the foundation of the company. By penetrating means he has strong grip on the policies, procedures, products and services. This helps company grow more and more.

3-    The Great Leader is like the Rocket: When in action, he focuses on the target with full zeal and zest. He does not get distracted by any other disturbances and challenges in his path.

4-    The Great Leader is like the Doctor: Who knows the real root cause of the diseases (issues). He is analytical in his approach. He not only take corrective actions in order to fix the issues but also takes preventive actions in order to overcome the diseases/problems so as to eliminate them permanently.

5-    The Great Leader is like the Train Engine: He has a clear destination in his mind. He makes sure that all of the passengers (employees) reach their destination. The passengers (employees) belong to so many categories (low/high performing, active/inactive, sick/healthy, poor/rich etc) however he takes all of them along with him towards the target destination and steadily reaches there. He keeps the engine up and running to ensure that target is achieved by all means.

6-    The Great Leader is like the Professor: He teaches his followers with theoretical, practical, pictorial, verbal, friendly and/or commanding ways of trainings. He is effective in communication and clearly elaborates his requirements/targets so that every single member clearly understands the target and his/her role.

7-    The Great Leader is like the Servant: He facilitates the tasks and paves the way for his clients (team members), eventually the clients focus on their major responsibilities.

8-    The Great Leader is like the Newspaper: He highlights and summarizes the critical happenings so that the readers (followers) are up-to-date about surroundings and adjust their work related strategies accordingly.

9-    The Great Leader is like the Water: He cleanse the system by removing the dirt, by reducing the impurities.

10-   The Great Leader is like a Cricket Captain: He organizes the players/resources based on the demand. He performs for his team and not for his personal achievements. For him, team comes first so his intentions from his team and company's perspective are WIN-WIN.

[HM:257647] 7 Things You Should Add to Your Stop Doing List...Right Now!

You probably make lists of things to do and follow them through. But what about the things you should stop doing? Successful people do not do the following things but chances are you still do. Make a decision to add these to your "stop doing list" these from today going forward:

1.      Making Excuses. Successful people do not blame others or make excuses or complain about their bad luck. They take full responsibility for their lives. They know that success and failure lie in their hands. So stop being a victim, stop whining and stop making excuses.

2.
Drifting. Winners have a plan. They have a direction and a purpose. They do not
drift through life hoping for the best. They set goals and then set about achieving them.  If you approach each day in a happy go lucky way then stop. Stop drifting and start planning. Develop a vision of a successful you. List what you have to do to get there. Plan your work then work your plan.

3.
Sitting in Front of a Computer All Day (or worse still…a TV). Sure there are some important things you can do sitting at your screen but do not spend all day there. Get out and meet people, network, learn. Do things with the people you want to lead or help or do business with.

4.
Putting Things Off. Procrastination is the enemy of success. Decide on your objective, list out the tasks you have to complete, prioritize them and then get on with the top ones. We all suffer the temptation to put off the jobs we fear or dislike.  Bite the bullet. Eat the frog. Do the job.

5.
Just the Easy Stuff. Which tasks do you spend most time on? The important, the urgent, the easy or the routine? If you spend most of your time on easy or less important tasks then stop. You should focus first on the most important jobs, the ones that will move you towards your strategic objective. You should delegate or ignore the low value activities.

6.
Sitting in Ineffective Meetings. Do you waste time at work in low-value meetings? Most office workers do. Every meeting should have a clear purpose, an agenda and a skilled chairperson who keeps the meting focussed on delivering its objectives.  Do not go to poor meetings – just ask for a summary of agreed actions.

7.
Limiting your Ambition. Successful people have enormous self-belief, drive and ambition. They hold themselves to high standards. Are you holding yourself back? Have you lost some of your self-belief and confidence? Start afresh. Set yourself ambitious goals. Remind yourself of your skills and achievements. Motivate yourself every day.

If you can eliminate the low value activities and the negative things you do then you will free yourself to succeed. Stop doing the things that you know are wasting your time and start building your success.

[HM:257646] Story: Chicken, Chicken, Chicken

By Junaid Tahir

Colleague Faisal is a person who prefers to stay alone. He is kind of introvert person who does not mingles well with people. On Sunday noon time, he opens his lunch box and eats fried chicken which makes him feel good. On Monday noon, he opens the lunch box and eats fried chicken again. This time he does not like it as much as he did yesterday. On Tuesday, at lunch time, he opens the lunch box and finds fried chicken which he eats but this time I can see irritation in his mood. Well, next comes the Wednesday, and guess what, he has fried chicken in his lunch box. He is annoyed to see fried chicken on fourth consecutive day but eats it without saying any words of complaint. On Thursday, just before the lunch break I converse:

"Most likely, you have fried chicken today"
"Yes"
"Why don't you ask your wife to give you something else for food which can keep your body healthy"
"I am unmarried, I pack my lunch myself"
"What !!! XoYz%*&%$O %$##  !@#%% "

Flash:This story might look strange but this is how we give mental food to our brains on daily basis. If we co-relate this story with a bad event of the past which we remember again and again, we are giving a special food called "Stress" to our mind on daily basis. Considering the fact that eating fried chicken on daily basis can lead our cholesterol levels towards danger zone causing chronic heart disease, can't we just think with common sense that giving stress to our brain and heart we are seriously impacting our body developing Sugar, High Blood Pressure, Heart blockage, Asthma, Anxiety and God know how many other diseases in the long run !!!

So the choice is ours. Either we keep feeding your brain the germs of negativity and stress  OR develop the power of not looking back and start living in today. Remember the fact that life never stops. People who live in their past, stop living in earth – or simple die soon. So we must exert our energies to bring something positive and fruitful today which can bring happiness in our life or in our loved ones' lives. About the problems we should develop the MGTD attitude: which means Meet them (confess the situation with no fear), Greet them (think positively), Treat them (focus on solution) and finally Defeat them (do practical things for eradication).

[HM:257645] Story of Gold Coins - The 99 Club

Once upon a time, there lived a King who, despite his luxurious lifestyle, was neither happy nor content. One day, he came upon a servant who was singing happily while he worked. This fascinated the King; why was he, the Supreme Ruler of the Kingdom, unhappy and gloomy, while a lowly servant was so joyous. The King asked the servant, 'Why are you so happy?' The man replied, 'Your Majesty, I am nothing but a servant, but my family and I don't need too much -- just a roof over our heads and warm food to fill our tummies.'

The king was not satisfied with that reply. Later in the day, he sought the advice of his most trusted advisor. After hearing the King's woes and the servant's story, the advisor said, 'Your Majesty, I believe that the servant has not been made part of The 99 Club.' 'The 99 Club? And what exactly is that?' the King inquired.  The advisor replied, 'Your Majesty, to truly know what The 99 Club is, let's place 99 Gold coins in a bag and leave it at this servant's doorstep.'

Next day when the servant saw the bag, he picked it up and took it in. When he opened the bag, he let out a great shout of joy... So many gold coins! He began to count them. After several counts, he was at last convinced that there were 99 coins. 'What could've happened to that last gold coin? Surely, no one would leave 99 coins!' he wondered.  He looked everywhere he could, but that final coin was elusive. Finally, exhausted, he decided that he would have to work harder than ever to earn that gold coin and complete his collection.  And from that day, the servant's life was changed. He was overworked, horribly grumpy, and castigated his family for not helping him make  that 100th coin. He stopped singing while he worked.

Witnessing this drastic transformation, the King was puzzled. When he sought his advisor's help, the advisor said, 'Your Majesty, the servant has now officially joined The 99 Club...' He continued, 'The 99 Club is a name given to those people who have enough to be happy but are never contented, because they're always yearning and striving for that extra one, telling themselves: 'Let me  get that one final thing and then I will be happy for life.'

We can be happy, even with very little in our lives, but the minute we're given something bigger and better, we want even more! We lose our sleep, our happiness, we hurt the people around us; all these as a price for our growing greed and desires. That's what joining The 99 Club is all about

[HM:257644] The 4 Arguments

The following is an overview of the meaning of each of The Four Agreements, based on the writings of don Miguel Ruiz.

Be Impeccable with Your Word

Speak with integrity.  Say only what you mean.  Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others.  Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

Impeccable means "without sin" and a sin is something you do or believe that goes against yourself.  It means not speaking against yourself, to yourself or to others.  It means not rejecting yourself.  To be impeccable means to take responsibility for yourself, to not participate in "the blame game."

Regarding the word, the rules of "action-reaction" apply.  What you put out energetically will return to you.  Proper use of the word creates proper use of energy, putting out love and gratitude perpetuates the same in the universe.  The converse is also true.

Impeccability starts at home.  Be impeccable with yourself and that will reflect in your life and your relationships with others.  This agreement can help change thousands of other agreements, especially ones that create fear instead of love.

Don't Take Anything Personally

Nothing others do is because of you.  What others say and do is a projection of their own dream.  When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering.

We take things personally when we agree with what others have said.  If we didn't agree, the things that others say would not affect us emotionally.  If we did not care about what others think about us, their words or behavior could not affect us.

Even if someone yells at you, gossips about you, harms you or yours, it still is not about you!  Their actions and words are based on what they believe in their personal dream.

Our personal "Book of Law" and belief system makes us feel safe.  When people have beliefs that are different from our own, we get scared, defend ourselves, and impose our point of view on others.  If someone gets angry with us it is because our belief system is challenging their belief system and they get scared.  They need to defend their point of view.  Why become angry, create conflict, and expend energy arguing when you are aware of this?

Don't Make Assumptions

Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want.  Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama.  With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

When we make assumptions it is because we believe we know what others are thinking and feeling.  We believe we know their point of view, their dream.  We forget that our beliefs are just our point of view based on our belief system and personal experiences and have nothing to do with what others think and feel.

We make the assumption that everybody judges us, abuses us, victimizes us, and blames us the way we do ourselves.  As a result we reject ourselves before others have the chance to reject us.  When we think this way, it becomes difficult to be ourselves in the world.

Take action and be clear to others about what you want or do not want; do not gossip and make assumptions about things others tell you.  Respect other points of view and avoid arguing just to be right.  Respect yourself and be honest with yourself.  Stop expecting the people around you to know what is in your head.

Always Do Your Best

Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick.  Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.

Doing your best means enjoying the action without expecting a reward.  The pleasure comes from doing what you like in life and having fun, not from how much you get paid.  Enjoy the path traveled and the destination will take care of itself.

Living in the moment and releasing the past helps us to do the best we can in the moment.  It allows us to be fully alive right now, enjoying what is present, not worrying about the past or the future.

Have patience with yourself.  Take action.  Practice forgiveness.  If you do your best always, transformation will happen as a matter of course

[HM:257643] Professional Performance of Don and Donna

Don, a senior vice president for sales at a global manufacturing company, wakes up late, scrambles to get showered and dressed, has an argument with his teenage daughter over breakfast, then gets stuck in traffic on the way to work and realizes he will be late for his first meeting.

Donna, a marketing executive, wakes at 6 for a quick spin on the exercise bike, takes a moment to stretch and relax, then quickly gets herself ready, dresses and feeds her two kids before walking them to the bus, then catches the train to the office.

Which executive will have a more productive day at work?

That depends on whether Don—who’s had the more difficult morning—is able to manage his state of mind. For 20 years, we’ve worked with leaders in more than 30 countries and across diverse industries to help them understand how state of mind (that is, their moment-to-moment experience of life as generated by their thinking and as expressed by their feelings) can affect their leadership, and to help them manage their respective states of mind, rather than being managed by them.

Two years ago our organization launched a long-term global research initiative to provide quantitative data on the topic. We selected 18 states of mind and surveyed leaders around the world on how often they experience each one, the impact of each on their effectiveness and performance, and what they do to manage their states of mind. To date, we have surveyed and interviewed over 740 leaders.

Below is a chart that lists the percentage of leaders who reported experiencing each of the 18 states of mind often or regularly:

18leadership

Of the 18 states of mind in the chart, it came as no surprise that 94% of respondents reported that Calm, Happy and Energized (CHE) are the three that drive the greatest levels of effectiveness and performance. As Giglio Del Borgo, a country manager at Experian explains: “If you are energized, without being necessarily too excited about things or euphoric, that energy will transmit into the people working around you.”

The chart clearly shows that most leaders seem able to access CHE states on a regular basis. However, Frustrated, Anxious, Tired and Stressed (FATS) states of mind were also relatively common. And we found that certain factors such as age, gender, organizational level, organizational tenure, span of influence, and type/size of organization, are correlated with similar states of mind, with lower states more prevalent in certain categories of people—including the young, the male, those with less tenure, and those operating at lower organizational levels.

Most leaders reported that FATS states often yield benefits in the short term but are detrimental in the long term – especially to relationships. They also report that it is difficult to shift out of these states of mind when they are consistently present in the organizational culture or environment. Davida Fedeli, a former vice-president of human resources for Western Union Europe, told us: “There were times during the change integration process when I was constantly feeling frustrated because I was second-guessing stakeholder expectations. [But] at the end of the day, I was not getting the results I wanted by continuously staying in that state of mind.”

The leaders who responded to our survey also reported that it is much harder to shift from below the line states of mind to above the line states of mind. As Jim Daniell, COO of Oxfam America, noted, “When you’re stressed and frustrated it is much harder to see the state of mind you are in, and unless you have clear strategies to be aware of it when you are in it and then shift it, you more than likely will cause serious harm to yourself and your organization.”

So how do leaders shift from lower states of mind to higher states of mind and improve their effectiveness and performance? And how can they help other people in their organizations who tend to default to lower states of mind do the same? We’ve consolidated the best practices into four categories:

Thoughts and feelings. Acknowledge your emotions to reduce their intensity. Allow your thoughts to be transient. Visualize positive images to generate positive feelings. Refocus your attention on different stimuli. Journal to find clarity. And engage in meaningful conversations to foster understanding and optimism.

Physiology. Use deep breathing to reduce stress. Stretch to loosen muscles, stimulate blood flow and improve cognitive function. And take breaks to clear the mind, relax the prefrontal cortex and increase contentment.

External environment. Adjust lighting and block noise to generate calm. Listen to music to stimulate reflection. Eliminate clutter to reduce anxiety and improve focus. And spend time in nature to shift perspective.

Health and well-being.  Eat a well-balanced diet, stick to an exercise regimen and get adequate sleep to maintain your energy and balance.

Everything in the last category is a must-do. From the others, we recommend choosing the handful of practices that work best for you, then employing them together with consistency.

Don did just that. Realizing the state he was in, he took stock of his anxiety, engaged in deep breathing, visualized having a positive conversation with his daughter, and accepted that he would not change the traffic. He then began to explore how he would manage his lateness and his workload. His state of mind shifted and he felt clear for the first time that day.
