I know the reasons too.. Having worked as a personal financial planner and also as an insurance adviser (not now), I know how the insurance sales market works. 

at least 85% of agents representing LIC do not even know their products properly. They mostly mis-sell as advised by their development officers. ULIP products like Money Plus (probably discontinued now) were successful only because of mis-selling. 

in private sector, agents sell select few products, again due to pressure from their sales managers. No one really understands how an insurance product works and what are its real benefits. Product Simulation charts have become a major tool to mislead customers. No one wants to sell term insurance, though it has several good features.

 I mentioned about typical insurance agents, who sells only insurance policies. I believe most of them do not have proper financial education. They get high bouns/commission for all the policies other than term policies. So they do not prefer term policies. This is the explanation behind my point.

There are some Term insurances, HDFC has the best, check on policybazaar.com. Its more like general insurance. You could insure up to 2cr at a cost of about 20-30K depending on your age.
