[HM:253096] India's Most Romantic Palace Hotels

TAJ LAKE PALACE
This marbled palace sits on a four-acre island property in Udaipur, also known as the City of Lakes, and covers the island resting in the heart of a lake. Opulent interiors, Royal Butler service, and boat shuttles to and from the shore offer visitors a glimpse into a bygone era. Its 83 rooms and suites are fitted with beautifully carved wooden furniture, colourful murals and rich silk upholstery.
If you'd rather be on land, try the breathtaking Mewar Terrace Dining, where you sit under a cupola overlooking the lake. Spend a night at the Sajjan Niwas suite with its frescoes, mosaics and private terrace with views of the Aravallis. The Taj Lake Palace also houses a Jiva Spa, and has three restaurants -- Bhairo, Jharokha and Neel Kamal. Taj Lake Palace, Lake Pichola, Udaipur (+91 294 242 8800; www.tajhotels.com) Doubles from Rs 30,500.

The Oberoi Amarvilas
A view of the Taj Mahal would have been sufficient to push this stellar property right to the top of our list. But that's not all this stunning hotel has to offer. A mere 600 metres from the iconic monument, The Oberoi Amarvilas features traditional Mughal architecture, luxurious furnishings polished to perfection and an experienced staff eager to cater to your every need. Check into the hotel spa and opt for the Noor-e-Taj Romance ritual to get started with your day of love.
If you want to take your royal romancing a notch higher, we recommend the Kohinoor Suite, which comes with an unrestricted view of the Taj Mahal. Waking up to this manmade marvel each morning and watching it shimmer in the moonlight as you retire for the night is itself an exquisite experience. Interestingly enough, the suite's bathroom has the most spectacular view in the entire hotel. The Oberoi Amarvilas, Taj East Gate Road, Agra (+91 562 223 1515; www.oberoihotels.com) Doubles from Rs 40,000

Taj Falaknuma Palace

The latest jewel in the crown of Taj Hotels, Resorts & Palaces, this painstakingly restored palace is set 2,000ft above the city of Hyderabad, across 32 sprawling acres. Attractive fountains and lush gardens dot the property's landscape, while a treasure trove of rare manuscripts and books can be found in the Palace Library. Taj Falaknuma Palace has 60 beautifully refurbished rooms and suites, which come with Venetian chandeliers, stained-glass windows and elaborate murals.
The former residence of the Nizam of Hyderabad, the palace has also hosted visiting royalty, heads of state and celebrities in the past. A plush accommodation choice would be The Grand Royal Suites. Adorned with carpets woven in Turkey, exquisite artwork and upholstery, the rooms offer panoramic views of the city of Hyderabad. Check in at the Royal Jiva Spa and opt for the signature Nawab-e-Khaas treatment. A specially-blended, rich body scrub of almonds, rose petals, vetiver and saffron is followed by a divine massage.
The hotel also offers a special heritage walk, where you can stroll through gilded rooms in the palace, and peek into the royal life of its former inhabitants. Tapestries, fine brocades and beautifully inlaid furniture greet you at every corner. Taj Falaknuma Palace, Engine Bowli, Falaknuma, Hyderabad (+91 40 6629 8585; www.tajhotels.com) Doubles from Rs 28,000

Rambagh Palace

First built as a modest home for the favourite handmaiden of the late Gayatri Devi - Maharani of Jaipur - the property was converted into a palace in 1925, and housed the royal family for nearly 50 years. This heritage property has 46 rooms and 33 luxury suites. Admirers of the late queen should stay in the Maharani Suite, which was designed for her by Hammond's of London, her favourite designer. The Suryavanshi Suite, resplendent with its high ceilings, antique furniture and fabulous city views is another great accommodation option.
The hotel has three restaurants and two bars. The Rajput Room offers all-day dining, while Suvarna Mahal is regarded for its authentic Indian cuisine. Also visit The Veranda, a casual alfresco restaurant. The Polo Bar and Steam are the drinking hotspots at the palace. The property is perfect for polo fans as the Rambagh Polo Grounds is next door. For a royal couple experience, take a city tour in one of the vintage cars that are available on hire. Rambagh Palace, Bhawani Singh Road, Jaipur (+91 141 221 1919; www.tajhotels.com) Doubles from Rs 25,500

Umaid Bhavan Palace

Surrounded by 26 lush acres of perfectly manicured gardens, Umaid Bhavan Palace in Jodhpur is one of the largest private residences in the world. Built from yellow sandstone in the art-deco style, a rage during the 1920s, the palace has only 64 rooms, which makes it a particularly exclusive retreat. Still home to the royal family of Jodhpur, the property's architecture has been influenced by versatile styles, as is evident from its Renaissance dome and Rajput inspired towers.
With its own private museum, marbled squash courts and recreation room, this property offers plenty to see and do. If you're in the mood for a quiet dinner, the hotel will set up a lavish spread for you and your partner in a private corner in the palace or the grounds. Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur (+91 291 251 0101; www.tajhotels.com) Doubles from Rs 26,500.
