[HM:255304] Open Networks vs. Closed: where do you stand?

Open Networks vs. Closed: where do you stand?

Most wireless networks are closed, meaning the signal is encrypted and the network is password protected. This in theory means the only people able to use the network are those who pay for it. However since the advent of wireless home broadband many people are leaving their networks open for anyone in range to use. In some cities this has made it much easier for people to use these free networks. Additionally some towns and cities have set up zones where people can use the internet for free wirelessly.

Additionally some cafes allow free use of networks (when you buy a muffin, etc). How do you feel about these Open Networks? Do you/would you let other people use your wireless? The other possibility with shared networks is that two households could share the internet, and the bill saving money.

Advantages:
More connectivity in the UK.
Allow poorer people to use the network
More efficient: potentially fewer networks
It's a nice thing to do.

Disadvantages:
Potentially slower network (more use)
Greater Potential for security breach
Potential misuse (downloading risky material)

Additionally can greater connectivity in poor areas relieve poverty? (Even if the connection is broadcast from a Ground Station?) Could lowly paid online economic activity significantly increase a poverty stricken family's income? Around a billion people live on less than a $ a day. With access to the internet surely they could earn a lot more. (it's a shame so many old computers are discarded when they could be reused by the poorest people). What do you think about the Open Vs Closed debate?
