You observation is right...

I think when it says that it removes unnecessary space it means space count more than one. 

For AB CD is a standard spacing however if you try AB        CD   then it will convert to AB CD.

Probably the same has not been elaborated in the original post :)

What Does It Do ?

This function removes unwanted spaces from a piece of text.

The spaces before and after the text will be removed completely.

Multiple spaces within the text will be trimmed to a single space

Syntax

=TRIM(TextToTrim)

Formatting

No special formatting is needed.
