Criticism isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. This may seem “soft,” but psychologists and brain researchers have known this for a long time: positive-focused conversations — ones centered on dreams, strengths, and possibilities — generate upbeat emotions and good memories. In turn, these feelings can motivate us to work harder. That doesn’t mean that managers shouldn’t step in if we’ve gone off the rails, of course. But they should tread lightly. Overall, the more positive the discussion, the more positive the outcome.
