Position Summary:
This is a senior level position requiring a self-motivated individual with a passion for creative problem solving and the ability to envision and build innovative solutions to complex problems. The role of this position will encompass visualizing and delivering solutions for the database backbone of the organization by defining/redefining/managing the corporate data assets. The architect will involve in many facets of data management and administration including performance, process optimization, process monitoring, augmenting the logical and physical models of the database backbone of software applications. Researching and resolving data, process, reporting or ETL related issues using the problem symptoms logged by the user groups will be required.
With a strong understanding of analytics, reporting tools, data migration tools, and data integration experience, the Data Architect role will play a pivotal role in supporting a significant research oriented data warehouse of clinical trials and bio-informatics data. This role is responsible for designing, modeling, documenting, and guiding the logical and conceptual relationships of data and data manipulation for complex analytical reporting as well as the implementation of data loading and transformation processes used to populate and maintain the data warehouse.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Translates business requirements and models into feasible and acceptable data warehouse designs; designs and builds appropriate data repositories and data movements (dimensional or relational databases) to ensure that business needs are met.
- Designs and oversees the implementation of data transformation and change processing procedures to ensure that data from multiple sources is aggregated, normalized and updated and then published to multiple target environments.
- Interacts with internal and external clients while designing internal and external data interfaces to ensure that database development needs conform to specifications.
- Coordinates with external data providers and clinical analysts to ensure that business and analytic model is accurately represented and understood by all relevant parties.
- Serving as Subject Mater Expert on ETL, SSIS, SSRS, OLAP, OLTP, Data Warehousing, Performance Tuning, Optimization, SQL, TSQL, Database Schema, and Data Modeling.
- Creating and optimizing all database objects, stored procedures, tables, views, triggers, indexes, user-defined functions. Excellent technical knowledge of MS SQL Server internals.
- Establishes data standards and policies, data modeling, systems architecture design, and migration system architectures to ensure access to and integrity of data assets. Define and maintain Data Naming and Data Definition Standards.
- Analyzes changes in transactional processing, business processes, and external information sources and recommends modifications, to improve quality of applications and meet additional requirements. Coordinates activities of database analysts and other database personnel to determine appropriate database deployment strategies and parameters, to ensure cost effectiveness and system efficiency.
- Lead data cleaning to correct inconsistent, unused, or duplicate data.
- Tune queries, assign proper indexes, create triggers and stored procedures.
- Imports and exports data to and from the SQL Server databases.
- Insures the quality and integrity of all operational processes. Insures that all processes are fully documented
- Support administration, upgrade, maintenance and user support of an Oracle 10g database
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in information systems, computer science or related field.
- Ten (10) or more years of experience in data processing, architecture, and software development preferably to include clinical trials or bioinformatics data.
- Five (5) or more years of experience in managing large data stores, warehouse and enterprise data strategy initiatives in support of data analytics preferably working with clinical trial data or related bioinformatics experience.
- In depth knowledge in Microsoft SQL Server internals including T-SQL programming, debugging, index tuning, tracing, business intelligence is required.
- Working knowledge of Oracle 10g/11g and .Net technologies, SAS is a strong plus.
- Experience analyzing and working with relational and dimensional modeling.
- Experience in troubleshooting and resolving database problems.
- Experience in incorporating best practices from the industry in streamlining database framework.
- Project and task oriented with ability to wear multiple hats and to work well within a group or independently with strong work ethic.
- Strong communication skills to communicate with team members, external data providers and management.
- Ability to deal with and resolve ambiguity.
- Prior history of validating existing data architectures and makes recommendations for improvements.
- Strong technical documentation skills.
